📖 Equine Academy a Continued Success 📖
CTA recently hosted its 7th Equine Academy on October 19th & 20th. Attendance again was booming, and the weekend was spent teaching all aspects of horse management and welfare. The Equine Academy has continued to be a success thanks to legislative donations, for which we are so grateful for.
The next Equine Academy is set for November 30th & December 1st. You can register online by Clicking Here

CTA was recently notified that we have been awarded the 2024 Lavin Cup from the American Association of Equine Practitioners! We are very honored to be selected for this amazing recognition. CTA is what this award signifies, which is to recognize and demonstrate exceptional compassion or develop and enforce rules and guidelines for the welfare of the horses. CTA will be honored and presented with this award during this year’s AAEP Annual Convention in Orlando, FL at the President’s Luncheon on Tuesday, December 10, 2024.
🌟 Adoption Success Story 🌟 By My Side & Primer Portento
We love watching our horses thrive in their new homes. Here is an update on 2 of our alumni!
My name is Ariana Rodriguez, current trainer at CTA. In 2017 I started volunteering at CTA with no experience working with OTTB’s. When I started working as a volunteer, one of the horses that caught my eye was By My Side. She was what we call a spicy red mare, but I liked that about her. A few months passed and I decided to adopt her. I worked with her mainly on riding bareback with a rope halter. We also got the chance to do some barrels, trails rides, and jumping. When she turned 12, it was decided By My Side's future would be a sanctuary mare due to DJD (Degenerative Joint Disease).
I was looking at another OTTB to continue my riding journey. That OTTB was Primer Portento. He came to CTA as an aggressive horse with no manners on the ground. I was trusted to work with him to take him out of that mental state. Primer Portento was retired at the age of 11 yrs with 119 starts. Like By My Side, he was a bit of a challenge, but that didn’t scare me. As I started to work with him, he changed so much and turned out to be such a loving horse.
In May 2020 I adopted Primer Portento. By My Side and Primer Portento currently reside on Ceiba where we got the chance to purchase a house with land to have the horses home. By My Side (14 yrs old) is now a sanctuary mare, and has a companion miniature pony which she loves named Rockero. Primer Portento has only been used for trail riding. Both horses share a pasture with Rockero and enjoy their relaxing retirement.
I have to say that I’m grateful for owning these two horses. They helped me so much to improve as a rider and trainer pushing my limits. They alspo taught my Paso Fino how to be part of a herd. These OTTB’s deserved there well-earned retirement!
🐎 Well-Deserved Retirement for Chris and Dave 🐎
This past August, CTA was finally able to secure a true warhorse named "Chris and Dave". This 2013 Kentucky-bred gelding had amassed 103 starts in 10 years of racing, earning $942,358! Chris and Dave had a lot of people interested in helping him retire in Maryland. His breeder purchased him from his racing connections who finally agreed to retire him, and sent him to CTA. After a vet evaluation and some downtime, Chris and Dave made his way to Mid-Atlantic Horse Rescue in Maryland! We are very grateful to everyone that supports these horses and our partner aftercares.
🐴 CTA Reaccredited through Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance for 2024 & 2025 🐴
This year the CTA was up for reaccreditation with the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance. To be accredited, organizations must complete a thorough application process, as well as an inspection from a TAA inspector. We are pleased to announce that we once again were approved for accreditation for another 2 years! We are proud to be a part of a wonderful organization which focuses on helping these amazing horses in their retirement from racing.
The TAA accredits, inspects, and awards grants to approved aftercare organizations to retrain, retire, and rehome Thoroughbreds using industry-wide funding. To learn more about the Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance, Click Here.
🐴 Sponsor a Sanctuary Horse 🐴
Sponsoring a sanctuary horse is easy, and every donation makes a difference. Whether you're looking to make a one-time contribution or set up a recurring monthly donation, your support will help us continue our important work and provide a safe and loving home for our horses.
It has been a busy first half of the year at CTA as we had several horses transferred back to the mainland, as well as adopted locally.
✈️ Corre Jean Corre, Chris and Dave, and Bit Growth all flew back to the mainland either to other TAA Rescues or to new homes!
⛱️ Tico G found a new home right here on the island!
📣 Our current statistics are 16 new intakes and 5 returns so far in 2024. Currently at the CTA we have 19 horses, 13 of which are looking for a forever home.
🏇 We have helped a total of 317 Thoroughbreds since we began!
🏦 Financials🏦
At CTA, transparency is at the core of everything we do. We believe that it's important to be upfront and honest about our finances, so you can see exactly how we are using your generous donations to make a difference in the lives of the horses we serve. That's why we are pleased to share our latest profit and loss statement with you.
